History of AutoCAD

Autodesk started development of AutoCAD in the late 1970s, when it was called AutoLISP, as a mainframe application. It was designed for an upper-level systems programming course in the Engineering Technology department at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). AutoLISP was an offshoot of the UCSD Lisp Machine Project (Lisp Machine), which was an early attempt to use a software-based computing machine to perform scientific and engineering calculations on the order of magnitude of those performed by the larger and more expensive minicomputers (and later, microcomputers) of the time.

From 1978-1979, Michael Fessler began working on the AutoLISP project at UCSD. By 1979, programming in AutoLISP was approaching the point where it was ready to be released for general use. The project was put on hold, however, when the University of California decided to fund a new project called the CAD/PLATO. In 1981, the AutoLISP project was revived, this time for use with the new IBM PC. When the CAD/PLATO project was cancelled, the AutoLISP project was re-dedicated to the AutoCAD effort, and development proceeded with this new version of AutoLISP. Michael Fessler was chosen as the lead architect and developer, and the UCSD AutoLISP team designed and built a new interpreter for the UCSD Alto computer that could execute AutoLISP code written in the new version of AutoLISP. At this time, the project was renamed to AutoCAD.

In 1981, Michael Fessler left UCSD to pursue the AutoCAD project full time. In 1982, AutoCAD was first released as a desktop application running on PCs with hardware graphics adapters.

In 1982, while the AutoCAD project was still based on AutoLISP, Autodesk hired two UCSD graduate students, David Lennox and John Shneiderman, to write a program to control the hardware graphics adapter in the original AutoCAD.
